Planning for Older Refrigerant Systems

Some residential air conditioning systems use R-22 refrigerant. New residential HVAC equipment containing this refrigerant could no longer be manufactured or imported beginning in 2010. The United States then ended production and import of new R-22 on January 1, 2020.

Existing systems can still be serviced with refrigerant recovered, reclaimed, or produced before the phaseout. However, supply is limited and associated costs continue to rise. When older equipment needs a substantial repair, we can evaluate its condition and discuss repair or replacement considerations.

Jefferson Parish AC Permit Requirements

Jefferson Parish requires a licensed mechanical contractor to obtain a permit before installing or replacing an AC condenser. Work can’t begin until the required permit has been issued.

Routine air conditioning maintenance and minor repairs typically don’t require a Jefferson Parish permit. Full system replacements and installations involving a new condenser or air handler generally do. Requirements can depend on the scope of work, so they should be confirmed before installation begins.
