New Orleans winters are short, mild, and often over before homeowners feel like they started. The average January high sits at 60.4°F, the average low at 48.6°F, and temperatures rarely dip below 35°F for more than a day or two. That climate reality matters enormously when you’re replacing a heating system, because the equipment you choose doesn’t just affect those few cool months. It affects every utility bill through a long, humid summer and a transitional season that can stretch well into spring and fall.

The question we hear most often from homeowners facing a system replacement is whether to install a heat pump or stay with a traditional furnace. The honest answer depends on what’s already in your home, but the local climate almost always points in one direction. Here’s how to think through it.
How Each System Actually Works
The fundamental difference between these two systems is the difference between moving heat and making it. A furnace generates heat directly, either by burning natural gas or using electric resistance elements, then pushes that heated air through ductwork. It does one job and only runs when temperatures drop. In summer, it sits idle while a separate air conditioner handles cooling.
A heat pump works differently. It moves heat rather than creating it, running the same refrigeration cycle that powers your air conditioner but in reverse during winter. In summer, it pulls heat out of your home and rejects it outside. In winter, it extracts heat from the outdoor air and moves it inside. One system handles both seasons.
The efficiency difference matters. An air-source heat pump with a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 3.0 delivers three units of heat energy for every one unit of electricity it consumes, because it’s moving energy rather than generating it. A gas furnace rated at 95% Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) converts at roughly a 1:1 ratio. In a mild climate, that efficiency gap adds up across the heating season.
Why New Orleans Climate Favors Heat Pumps
Standard air-source heat pumps begin losing effective heating capacity when outdoor temperatures fall below roughly 35°F to 40°F. In most of the country, that’s a real limitation. In New Orleans, it almost never comes into play.
With average January lows of 48.6°F, our winters sit comfortably within the range where a heat pump runs at peak efficiency. New Orleans also falls within ASHRAE Climate Zone 2A, the hot-humid classification, which means the equipment sizing and installation standards that apply here are built around long cooling seasons and mild heating demands. Furnaces installed in this zone are frequently oversized for the actual winter load, which leads to short cycling: the system fires up, heats the space quickly, shuts down, and repeats without making a dent in indoor humidity.
That humidity factor is where heat pumps offer a benefit most homeowners don’t consider at first. New Orleans doesn’t have a clean “on” and “off” for its seasons. Spring and fall can bring weeks of mild temperatures with indoor relative humidity that still needs managing. A heat pump continues to dehumidify during those transitional periods, running in cooling mode at low load when temperature alone wouldn’t justify it. A furnace can’t do this at all.
When a Furnace Still Makes Sense
There are situations where staying with a gas furnace is the right call, and a good assessment starts with what’s already in the home.
Existing Infrastructure Is Working
If your home has a natural gas line, a functioning central air conditioner with years of life remaining, and ductwork in good condition, adding a gas furnace can be the lower-disruption choice. You’re not replacing two systems at once, and the upfront cost is lower when only one piece of equipment needs to change.
Cold Snap Performance
Gas furnaces deliver fast, high-temperature air output. On the rare New Orleans night that dips toward freezing, a furnace brings a room up to temperature more quickly than a standard heat pump. Homeowners who want that burst-heat capability have two options: a standalone gas furnace paired with a separate AC, or a dual-fuel hybrid system that combines a heat pump for mild weather with a gas furnace that activates only when temperatures fall below a set threshold.
No Ductwork Doesn’t Default to a Furnace
It’s worth addressing a common assumption: homes without existing ductwork aren’t automatically furnace candidates. A ductless mini-split heat pump handles both heating and cooling without any duct runs, making it a practical option for additions, older homes, or rooms where extending ductwork would be costly.
Cost to Install, Cost to Operate, & Available Incentives
The sticker price of a heat pump looks higher than a furnace until you account for what you’re actually comparing. A furnace only heats. A heat pump heats and cools. When both systems need replacement, the total installed cost of a single heat pump is often similar to or lower than buying a furnace plus a separate central air conditioner. On operating costs, a heat pump running efficiently in Climate Zone 2A conditions typically costs less across a full year than a gas or electric furnace, because it performs useful work in both cooling and heating mode rather than converting fuel to heat through combustion.
The current incentive picture in Louisiana deserves an accurate summary. The federal 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, which had offered a tax credit of up to 30% on qualifying heat pump installations capped at $2,000, expired December 31, 2025, and was eliminated by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act signed in July 2025. New installations in 2026 don’t qualify. Louisiana’s HEEHRA consumer rebate portal, which will eventually offer rebates through the High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Act program, hadn’t launched as of mid-2026. That means the most accessible incentives right now come through utility-level programs and state-administered options through the Louisiana Department of Conservation and Energy. When you’re getting estimates, ask specifically about what’s currently available through your utility provider.
Questions to Ask Before You Choose
Before choosing between systems, a properly conducted Manual J load calculation should inform equipment sizing. It determines the actual heating and cooling load your home requires based on square footage, insulation, window orientation, and local climate data. Oversized equipment is a problem in any category, and this climate is unforgiving of it. Beyond proper sizing, three questions help narrow the decision.
- What condition is your ductwork in? If your existing ducts are in good shape, both systems are viable candidates. If ductwork is absent or would need significant work, a ductless heat pump is often the more practical path.
- What’s the age and condition of your current AC? If your air conditioner is near the end of its life and you have a gas line in place, replacing both systems with a heat pump typically wins on total cost. If the AC has years of life remaining and only the furnace is failing, a furnace replacement may make more sense for now.
- How long do you plan to stay in the home? Heat pumps in New Orleans typically last around 15 years under year-round use. Gas furnaces used only seasonally in this mild climate can reach 20 years or more. The longer your ownership horizon, the more a heat pump’s lower annual operating costs work in its favor.
The Right System for Most New Orleans Homes
For the majority of Greater New Orleans homeowners replacing aging equipment, a heat pump delivers better year-round value. The local climate keeps temperatures within the system’s efficiency range almost every night of the year, the dehumidification benefit covers seasons that a furnace simply ignores, and combining heating and cooling in one system simplifies both installation and long-term maintenance.
